How children can stay healthy with outdoor toys - By: Felicity Lightbody

Technology is constantly changing and evolving. Parents just cannot seem to catch up. From the new video games that come out weekly to the bigger and better mobile phones, iPods, and DVDs it may seem like playing outside is a thing of the past. Playing outdoors provides children with exercise, fresh air, Vitamin D, and much more. It is important to their overall health that children have free time to play and explore the great outdoors and impacts upon their mental wellbeing.

A great way to get children up off the couch and outdoors is to provide them with some outdoor toys. Kids love slides, swings, sandboxes, and pretty much anything with wheels, such as bikes, wagons, skateboards, and wheely bugs. Outdoor toys are a sure-fire way to encourage kids to spend time outdoors. According to Terri Murphy's article, "Exercise for kids" published in the Clinical Reference Systems Journal, children should get "60 minutes of exercise every day." To help children fulfil their sixty-minute requirement parents should consider buying their children a wheelybug or some other type of ride on toy.

There are toys that cost 50 pounds or less and are perfect for any flat surface, so ideal for outside, such as cars or trikes. If we take the example of a wheelybug, its plus point is that both boys and girls love them. They come in many different styles including, bumble bees, ladybugs, tigers, cows, and even a mouse. Children who play outside will not only be getting the exercise they need to stay healthy and fit but will also be learning balance and improving fine motor skills.

Terry Murphy's article, "Exercise for kids" mentions that "as our kids spend more time inside and are less active, they are at higher risk for becoming overweight, feeling tired or lazy, and losing muscle tone" making outdoor activities a must for a healthy child. One of the easiest ways to ensure children are getting the proper amount of outdoor exercise is to go outside and play with them.

With just a little encouragement and a few outdoor toys children will be begging to go outside and play.
