How can I get into the SEO industry? - By: Davis Morris

The SEO industry is perhaps unlike any other industry in the sense that you don’t need any prior experience, or even qualifications, in order to enter it. All that is really required is an interest in the Internet, in the way search engines work and the way that people use websites. Of course, it’s not quite that simple when it comes to looking for SEO jobs. You won’t just be able to walk into any SEO agency and declare that you’re an avid search engine optimization expert, willing to start work on their clients’ websites immediately. You do need to prove yourself – but you can do that in your own time, with your own websites and by reading and learning from online sources.

When SEO agencies are looking for people to fill their online marketing jobs, they’re not after people with degrees in computer sciences, or people with mathematics degrees and years of experience with building and developing websites (although these qualifications won’t hurt, of course). No, they’re looking for people who are interested in SEO, people who have researched it and no the difference between SEO myths and SEO facts. You can learn all of this online of course, but there’s no real substitute for practicing what you have learnt, which you can do with your own websites.
Online marketing jobs often carry with them this mythology that you need to be extremely qualified and you need years of experience in order to get into an SEO agency, but a genuine interest in online marketing is always more important than any qualification. So, for anyone interested in looking for search engine optimisation jobs, ask yourself the following questions:

Do you use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and other social networking websites? Do you run your own blog, post on it regularly and look at the traffic that you receive, and where that traffic has come from. Have you looked at where your website ranks in search engines for different phrases, and experimented with how you can change that ranking through different posts?

If you have answered yes to all of these questions, then whether you have a degree in computer science or not, you’re obviously interested in online marketing and have knowledge of SEO that you perhaps didn’t realised that you possessed. This is the sort of interest that will serve someone well in the search engine optimization industry, and could well see them embark on a great career as an SEO expert. Here at searchengineoptimization.co.uk, we have many different SEO jobs available for people looking to get into the online marketing industry – not just those who wish to be SEOs themselves. For example, you may want to become an SEO account manager and liaise with clients about their SEO campaigns, or you may want to sell SEO services to people and get a kick out of closing deals. Whatever your interest, and whatever your experience in online marketing, you may well find the SEO jobs that suit you, and us, perfectly.
