How and when does Student Loan Forgiveness come into play? - By: Manu Geol

Student loan repayment is a lengthy and expensive affair. Borrowers take up different consolidation programs to repay their student loan debt easily and regularly. This includes the federal student loan consolidation programs too (which a number of students in college debt seek). The student loan services help in student loan consolidation calculations in order to arrive at various options and help choose the best option for the student.  Besides that, there are certain circumstances in which a student may seek for loan forgiveness.

All your loan or part of it is cancelled if the educational institute closed within 90 days of your enrollment or it was not able to complete the specific program.

Though, these circumstances are not what a student would want to occur, the college loan forgiveness does provide some respite to students who get stuck in such a difficult situation.

If the school didn’t qualify a borrowers status before beginning of studies than the student can apply for loan forgiveness. Similar requests can be made in other circumstances such as when the student becomes permanently disabled or if the institute didn’t evaluate a student’s ability to benefit from the course before commencing studies.

Although student loans cannot be discharged in a bankruptcy it would be wise to consult a legal counsel for a specific condition. There are several schools that don’t provide proper training, have inadequate equipment and fail to provide the promised job placement. The student loan will not be discharged for these schools and the borrower has to seek relevant legal counseling if the person strongly believes that he or she is eligible for loan forgiveness.

The federal government practices student loan cancellation or forgiveness if a person fulfills certain criteria. If qualified, the borrower can avail a part or complete cancellation of the loan. One of the ways is voluntary work being performed by the borrower. By working in voluntary organizations such as AmeriCorps or Peace Corps, a borrower can seek loan forgiveness.

Performing military service may also grant you eligibility for a student loan repayment exemption. Similarly, students who teach in elementary or secondary school from poor communities can be forgiven a portion of their loans. Certain law school loans can also be cancelled provided the borrower is serving in non-profit organizations. Students who do not qualify for loan forgiveness should search for suitable college loan consolidation programs to lower their monthly repayments. The students can also seek advice from a qualified debt counselor in order to handle extreme debt situations.
