How an iPhone Digitizer is replaced? - By: Steve Mc Karmik

iPhone digitizer is the device attached to the iPhone screen. Usually it resembles a plastic film and is visible only if the screen is damaged. It gives the touch functionality to the phone. It connects to iPhone’s motherboard and transmits information about the finger position and motion on the touch screen. Its damage - commonly due to screen glass cracks, when the phone is dropped or stepped or slammed against a hard surface – makes the phone unusable.

Though screen damage may be visible, damage to the digitizer is invisible. Also, the iPhone digitizer might malfunction by itself even in absence of screen damage. Problems with the iPhone digitizer can be identified using several symptoms. If your iPhone touch screen either experiences erratic behavior, poor or response or dead spots; or random opening of applications, it is probable that the problem is with the iPhone digitizer.

Replacing the digitizer is the only option to restore touch functionality of the iPhone, in case of damage, owing to its unique design. Moreover, the iPhone glass has to be replaced at the same time. Replacement screen kits are available for purchase online. Here are simple instructions that introduce you to replacing an iPhone digitizer.

Hold the power button and once the slider appears, slide it to the right to power down. Using the iPhone SIM remover tool, take out the iPhone’s SIM card and SIM tray. Then, insert the iPhone case opener tool into the gap between the iPhone glass screen and the chrome bezel. The space just beneath the home button is the easiest spot to open the case. Lever the glass gently away from the iPhone’s base.

Next, disconnect the three cables holding the rear case to the iPhone motherboard using the iPhone case opener tool or even your finger; this unplugs the rear case. Gently pry the iPhone battery and unscrew the five screws around the iPhone edges too. If there’s a black tape covering the screws, remove that too. Then, carefully lift the motherboard out of its slot and remove it. If there are any cables attached, disconnect them. Certain iPhone models require disconnection of the two small logic boards.

Now, with great care, remove the LCD screen and the iPhone digitizer by cautiously separating them from the main panel. To ease this step, insert a small exact knife in between the screen glass and the frame. Then, insert the Replacement iPhone screen containing the new glass screen and the new digitizer. Check if you need to manually attach the digitizer to the glass screen with adhesive as some kits are designed that way. Afterward, follow the steps mentioned on your replace screen kit. Now, replace the motherboard and reassemble the phone.

Even though the steps seem to be pretty simple, it is recommended to approach an iPhone repair shop, where you can find professional iPhone repair personnel, who can finish the job at a very reasonable rate. Furthermore, it saves you the time and money spent in acquiring adequate tools to replace the digitizer.
