How a single book read to a child can change their life - By: Brian Burton

A single book read to a child can change his or her life. Reading a book to a child anytime of the day could help him or her in two ways: the child's language and vocabulary skills are developed at an early age, and the lesson contained in the story could teach a child a certain value that will help him succeed in the future. Whether the book read is about a children's story, an historical event, or a biography of a notable person, a single book could affect a child's future in a very positive way.

The Positive Effect of Reading a Book to a Child
According to studies, reading a book to a child helps him develop his vocabulary and language skills. These improved vocabulary and language skills lead to him performing better in class when he is older. Reading a book to a child preconditions him for schooling that makes the classroom mode learning fun and worthwhile, and not being too daunting and intimidating. As a result, a child who has been read a book and exposed to books at an early age is more likely to learn quickly and more likely to excel academically. On the contrary, starting to read a book to a child in their preschool years could be too late for a child to stimulate his brain for language development, as well as the other forms of learning that follows. As studies on early child development have shown, reading a book to a child should start as early as six months and could be as late as three years of age.

The Lesson in a Story That Could Spell a Child's Success
Each story in a book contains a valuable lesson that could be very important for a child to succeed. As in most of children's stories, a good story inspires a child to become like the main character. Despite the challenges and difficulties faced by the protagonist of a story, everything always ends happily because of the virtues shown by the main character. With the main character pushing through difficulties to succeed, a child beleives that in any difficult situation heencounters, everything will end successfully if he will keep pushing on, moving forward, and doing what is right.

A single book may contain a simple story, the biography of a notable person, or any success story. Starting with a single book read to a child is a very important step to prepare a child for a higher level of learning and deeper thinking. Reading a book to a child early in his life will not only develop his intellectual skills but also help him become a well-rounded person from the lessons learned in a book. So read to your child daily and encourage him to read on his own, and it will pay dividends for the rest of his life.
