How a digital TV aerial works - By: Arthor Greenwald

These days, digital TV is the only TV worth buying. Analogue is almost entirely obsolete and as a replacement, more and more people have a digital TV aerial rather than an analogue one. This type of digital TV is great if you don’t want to pay a monthly subscription fee, because after installation, all you need to pay for is your TV license to get many different extra channels.

First of all, you will need a Freeview box. Freeview boxes are cheaper than ever these days and many people choose to install them themselves, although you can easily hire a professional to do it for you. A digital TV aerial works in a similar way to an old-fashioned TV aerial. A local transmitter will send out a signal and the aerial will pick it up. These local transmitters are situated in locations that enable them to send out a good signal to as many households as possible.

The difference between digital and analogue comes from how much data can be transmitted. With analogue signals, only one ‘channel’ of data can be fitted into each carrier, but with digital, many can be fitted into a carrier. This means you get a lot more channels. The same applies to DAB vs. analogue radio signals.

When your Freeview box received the data, it is in binary format (zeros and ones), and its job is to decode this and turn it into something that will make sense to you. The binary code is converted into pictures and sound while the Freeview box makes sure any errors that occurred in the sending process are sorted to improve your picture quality.

At Smart Digital, we can provide you with a range of digital products and services, including Freeview television, so that you can get great quality TV that is in tune with modern-day technology.
