How You Can Make Your Life A Dream - Goals and Action - By: Dr. Robert C. Worstell

Most everyone, at some point in their life, has dreamed of being somebody special, somebody big. Who hasn't fantasized about being the one who hits the game-winning homer? Who hasn't dreamed of being the homecoming queen? And how many times have we dreamed of being rich, or successful, or happy with our relationships?

For all our big dreams and great aspirations, our dreams remain just that - dreams. And our hopes for future success and notoriety seem to collect dust up in our mental attic.

Don't get your hopes up.

Did you ever think that could be reversed? What about changing those dreams into reality through action?

The most common problem to setting goals is believing the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking "I can't do this." or "It's too hard." "It's too impossible." "No one can do this."

But if everyone thought that way, there probably would never be any inventions, discoveries, or breakthroughs which make up the list of human accomplishments.

For instance, you may recall the baffled scientists who first tried to apply aerodynamic principles to the lowly bumblebee. In theory, they said, it was simply impossible for the bee to fly. Of course, the moral of the story is that no one ever got around to telling the bee that - so it simply flies as it ever has.

One key self-imposed limit is to have these grand dreams and then to take no action on them. The outcome is often that there are only dull, humdrum lives - with broken dreams and the only action is on TV sets.

Only to the degree you hold yourself back with doubt and pre-ordained failure, along with your limiting your actions toward that goal is exactly to the degree where your sky-high dreams are doomed to that dusty mental attic and prolonged sighs due to unmet goals.

You can try this exercise. On a sheet of paper, write down a goal you'd like to achieve. Now under that, make three headers - Things you know you can do; Things you might be able to do; and Things which are impossible to do.

Now work out the steps you can see right now that would help you achieve that goal. Put them under each header according to how hard you think they are to attain or achieve.

Every single day, review your goal statement and see this has having been accomplished. Look over your list of steps and see which of these can be accomplished that day. You will probably start with those "Things that you know you can do" first. But stray into "Things you might be able to do" occasionally and see if you just can't get those done somehow.

You may find that as you complete more and more of the items in the first two columns, that third column of "impossible" actions might become more tempting to try - for now you may see some ways that they can be completed.

Going through this process, you'll probably find that the goals you thought were once impossible have become easier to attain or achieve. The impossible begin to seem possible.

The point here is to not limit your imagination. Regardless of how high you aim, if you start working toward that goal with little steps, you can achieve it. It's been said to be unwise to set a goal which is unrealistic. However, in most cases, you can break down that star-high goals into smaller steps which are more doable right now. As you get these completely, you will see that the "might be able to do" steps can be accomplished by similarly breaking them down. And you'll probably see that nothing is particularly impossible when you apply this strategy to them.

It's only those who dream and never take action who inherit disappointment and disillusionment.

Airplanes, Cable television, Moon Landings, even skyscrapers - all of these were initially thought of as impossible. But hard-working and dedicated people were able to make these into our current reality simply by breaking down the goal into doable steps and getting these pushed through to completion.

Just keep dreaming, and keep your dreams polished, bright. Keep them constantly in front of you along with your "to-do" list of doable actions. Plan your work and work your plan. Just as you keep moving along this line, you'll find that really nothing is ever impossible as long as you keep to this strategy - and keep in action.

Because your life could be a dream - if you really you want it to be.
