Your abdominal muscles are very important. They are used in a wide variety of movements in conjunction with other major muscle groups. So it's important to keep your abs in shape, as well as keep them looking good. In this article you'll learn a few exercises that will quickly tighten, tone, and strengthen your abs.

This first exercise is known as the mummy sit up, because you look like a mummy when you are doing it. Lay down on your back, with your hands at your sides. While keeping your legs still, slowly raise your torso up into a sitting position. While you are doing so, raise up your arms like a mummy would, sticking them straight out in front of you. Slowly lay back down, and repeat. If you want, you can moan like a mummy, but that might seem a bit weird.

Leg lifts are another great way to torture, I mean, exercise your abs. Lay on the ground, with your hands above your head. Lift your legs up, keeping them straight, until they are at a ninety degree angle with the rest of your body. Then slowly lower them to the floor, but don't let them touch. Bring them up again, lower down, etc. Do as many as you can. If you really want to kick it up a notch, then raise your head up along with your legs, and touch your knees with your hands.

This next one is great for pretty much your whole upper body, particularly your abs and chest. Get one of those inflatable balls. Lay on top, facing the floor, with our shins resting on the ball, and your arms in push up position. Roll backward on the ball, until it's about up at your waist. Then slowly roll forward, as far as you can, while holding the push up position. You'll end up with your head past your arms. Then simply repeat, going back as forth as many times as you can.

This last one is a killer. You'll need some kind of chin up bar to do this. Pull yourself about halfway up into the chin up position, and then slowly lift your knees up to your chest. Bring them down slowly and repeat. For more of a workout, keep your legs straight, and lift them up to the horizontal position before bringing them back down again.

If you get into the habit of doing a few of these a day, pretty soon you'll have some incredibly strong abs. And if you eat right and keep your body fat pretty low, you can have fun walking around at the beach with your shirt off. Don't worry if you can barely do any of these, just get started and be consistent, and you'll see some dramatic results.
