To begin with, you'll need to establish rapport. This is when you feel comfortable with your prospect, and they feel comfortable with you. There's no tension in the air. The easiest way to do this is to simple match their body language, movements, and speed and tone of voice. It may seem awkward at first, but this is by far the quickest way to get comfortable with somebody.

After you've gotten relaxed with your prospect, it's time to start digging for information. Most salespeople would throw everything feature and benefit imaginable at them, hoping something would stick. Avoid doing this. Simple ask them what's important to them about this particular product or service. How do they imagine using it, how they imagine it will improve their lives. Ask them if they know anybody else who has used it and gotten good results.

The next step is simple. All you do is link up some aspects of your product to their stated desires. The amazing thing is that you will rarely have to do this. Just getting them talking about what they want, and how they imagine themselves using it will be enough. Just make sure you know enough about your product to verify their ideas or answer any specific questions they may have.

Try this the next time you're with a possible client. You'll find it's easy, respectful, and will dramatically increase your closing rates.
