How To Increase Your Vertical Jump Power - By: Jacob Hiller

This formula is often misinterpreted.

Force x Velocity = Power

Vertical jumps have nothing to do with this formula, although it does apply to Power. This is because,

in under half a second a vertical leap will take place, this is a very short amount of time. Power needs a certain amount of time in order to force the body upwards. With low velocity but high force, within the power formula you can still equal high power. However this will not work with a vertical jump, if this was to happen there would be no vertical jump at all.

For example, imagine you have the strongest man on the planet. Lets call him Scott. Take his strength then times it by ten. He is now incredibly strong but he is also very very slow. Contracting his legs will take him upwards of 3 seconds. He is incredibly strong but also incredibly slow, he has a massive amount of power output however. Although even with all this power he can not launch himself off the ground. This doesn't mean his power is weak, quite the opposite.

Now lets look at another person, we will name him Jamie and he plays basketball. Jamie is only 10 and is unable to even do a squat while wearing his backpack. He isn't very fast, but even wearing a 10 pound backpack, Jamie is able to vertical jump 14" high.

Although 14" isn't very high, it is still higher than Scott can jump, even though Scott is incredibly stronger than Jamie.

This is of course a completely made up scenario, and somebody with the strength of Scott would likely be able to jump off the ground, but that is not the point, the point is that strength does not dictate how you can jump higher.

When it comes to a vertical jump, it all revolves around your contraction length.
