How To Get The Most Out Of Sailing Lessons In Marina Del Rey - By: Chris Harmen

Boating is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend any waterfront vacation. There are many places that offer boating, ranging from oceanfront destinations to lakes and even rivers. A few places take this offering one step further and provide actual sailing lessons, where you can learn how to handle a craft on the water yourself. Long known as a destination for sailing, Marina del Rey has also become known for its many opportunities for novices. Anyone can enjoy boating regardless of their experience level, but these tips will help ensure that you're able to get the most out of your sailing lessons.

Tip #1: Arrive Early For Sailing Lessons

It's easy to lose track of time when you're on vacation, but it's imperative that you be early for your boating lesson, or at least that you arrive on time. First off, it can be difficult to find your way around some of the marinas, even if you do have a few extra minutes. In addition, it's good to have an opportunity to familiarize yourself with everything before instruction actually starts. As a vacationer, you won't be learning about the serious details of boating like a future captain, but you'll still want to get comfortable before you head out onto the water.

Tip #2: Dress For The Occasion

When you're sailing in Marina del Rey, it's just fine to wear a sundress, a hat, and sandals. When you're learning how to pilot a vessel yourself, it's best to come dressed in clothing that's a bit more ready for action. Sneakers are a good idea to prevent slipping if you're unfamiliar with a boat's rocking, and wearing shorts instead of a dress/skirt is always a good plan. Make sure that your clothing is not too loose, and that you are not wearing any scarves or other long pieces of clothing. Winds can get high on the ocean, and flapping clothing is a distraction that can be easily avoided. Finally, you'll want to bring sunglasses and make sure you're wearing sunscreen – it can get really bright on the water!

Tip #3: Listen Carefully To All Safety Instructions

Even if you're enjoying casual sailing lessons, you must listen carefully to every safety direction. Put on your life jacket when you are asked to do so, and do not remove it until told to do so. In addition, don't show up for your lesson while under the influence of alcohol. Most teachers won't let you on their boat if you are under the influence, and in many cases it's cause for the lesson to end without refund.

Tip #4: Come Ready To Enjoy!

Get excited about your voyage! You're going to learn how to captain a sailboat, one of the most exciting and historical vessels on the sea. Sailing Marina del Rey gives you a unique perspective that few visitors see, and you'll have great stories to tell your friends when you get home. Don't forget to snap some pictures of your boat before and after the voyage for show and tell. When you go sailing in Marina del Rey, some packages will even include special photo ops with "your" boat.

If you come prepared for your lessons, you'll be able to enjoy them much more fully. You won't have to worry about being uncomfortable due to wearing the wrong clothes, and you'll be prepared to simply soak up the atmosphere, learn everything you can, and really explore what it's like to pilot a boat.
