The most obvious place for you start with in effectively using the space in your garage is the walls around it. Have you thought of getting metal shelving installed in the walls of your garage? These shelves will definitely give you the space you need to store items such as your wrenches, screws, extra tires, and even some heavy equipment you may have in your garage.

Not everybody has the garage of their dreams in their homes. A lot of people move into apartments or buy homes with the garage pre-built for them, and pretty much all you can do is to make use of whatever space you have. Everybody wants plenty of space to work in the garage, but if the one you have doesn’t have what you want, you can work around it. You can either purchase a garage workbench or make one for yourself which has the exact measurements which will fit in your garage. What makes a garage workbench a great tool in making effective use of the space in your garage is that you can work and do whatever you want on the top, and then use the bottom part of the workbench for storage.

These can simply be stacked against a wall, and you may even consider getting the kind with wheels so that in case you feel like you’re in the mood to redecorate or rearrange your garage, you can move it from one side of the garage to the other. Industrial shelving is a great way to add extra space to a small garage as you can add layers of shelves in it to store your equipment. You can purchase industrial shelves in either closed (three sides of the shelf is closed with only one opening serving as the place for you to put the things you are going to store in) or open style. The open style comes with only the top and bottom part closed but the sides are open. This is great if you have a few items which are longer than most of the items you have, and getting a shelf exclusively for them seems unreasonable.

When you are in the process of organizing your garage, you should start with the bigger (and also the heaviest) items first. These should go towards the bottom of the shelves which has the most support. You can then work your way up towards the shelves by placing the smaller and lighter items towards the top.

Placing the bigger and heavier items in the lower part of your shelves is also a good idea for another reason. Aside from the support it receives from the legs of the shelves, the larger items will be easier to find and access when needed. Even though they are at the bottom, because of their size it will be easier to see them. Spare tires are a great item to store in the bottom part of your shelves.

However, even though you may have a lot of shelves installed in your garage, this does not mean you are already effectively making use of the space you have. Installing a garage workbench or metal shelving is not the end of it. You also need to take the extra effort to have a place for everything and to put everything in its place after you use it. You can’t just dump whatever items you used on your shelves and forget about them. If you do, this will only make it harder for you to find what you need when you need them in the future.

Also consider the type of shelves you need, the industrial shelving mentioned previously may be too heavy-duty for garage needs. Taking the extra effort to put everything back in its place saves you not only time, but money as well since you will be maximizing the use of your shelving and getting your money’s worth. Imagine this; wouldn’t it be nice to walk into your garage, knowing exactly where you need to go to find the tool you’d like to use?
