How To Deal With Breast Augmentation Dissatisfaction - By: Allyson Quesada

Many women find themselves unhappy with their results once returning home from the hospital or surgery center where they had their breast augmentation done. One of the main reasons why this happens is that there is almost always bruising and swelling of the breasts for the first few days after surgery. You might feel like they are too big and the swelling will never go down or your breasts will not look normal. As with any other surgery that alters the physical look of your body, there is sure to be a tinge of regret or dissatisfaction. You must realize this is a normal reaction and you must give yourself at least two weeks to consider.

While your surgeon can show you photos of women who have similar breasts as your before and after the surgery, there is no way to see exactly what they will look like in your body until the surgery is complete and all swelling has dissipated. If they still seem asymmetrical, too large or too small, you can consult your surgeon for advice on corrections. If you are dissatisfied with the overall feel of your implants, you should consult your doctor to see if exchanging them for a different type of implant might work for you.

Keep in mind that if you have a complication during your surgery or recovery process you will be more likely to be dissatisfied with the look of your breasts. A recent study conducted by the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard found that 60 percent more women in the study were aesthetically dissatisfied than those without a complication. The study showed that complications that happened closer to the time of the surgery, increased the likelihood the woman would be dissatisfied with the look of her new breasts.

Most breast augmentation surgeons recommend that women wait at least a year before having breast implants removed or replaced as this is often how long it takes to see the complete, final product of the breast enlargement. Once you have had time to consider how you would like your breasts to look, you should go back to the surgeon who did the operation and discuss your options. The options will typically include having the implants removed, repositioned, or replaced. These types of surgeries are usually called revisions and can fix most problems. If you are dissatisfied with the options your surgeon suggests for you, seek out another qualified surgeon who has done second procedures and women with breast implants and see if they have a solution you can agree on.

Another option for you might be to seek out the counsel of a certified psychologist who specializes in women or image issues. In fact, in the study mentioned above, one of the most successful ways to combat dissatisfaction was for the women to have psychotherapy sessions with a psychologist. These professionals might be able to help you tackle a deeper issue that may be causing your dissatisfaction with your body, no matter what you try to do to improve it. Therapy may be the perfect option for you to realize you actually are satisfied with your breast implants and even help you be happier in your daily life as well.

Even if you are satisfied with your breast augmentation in the days, weeks and months following your surgery, there may come a time when you become dissatisfied with them. This happens if there is a shift, rupture or simply drooping from gravity. Remember, having breast implants does not prevent your body from general aging and the effects of gravity pulling down on you. In this case your surgeon will probably suggest a breast lift to correct the problem. Also remember that breast implants are not designed to last a life time, in most cases they should be removed and/or replaced after 10 to 15 years.
