How To Create A Household Budget - By: Emily Retherford

Do you know how to create a household budget? If you want to get ahead in life financially, then learning how to create a household budget is one of the most essential financial skills you will ever have to learn.

Write down a list of all of the fixed bills you have to pay every month: Your rent or mortgage, your utilities, your car payments, your insurance payments, your cell phone and Internet bills. Also write down all of your credit cards, student loans, personal loans, and collection items (if any). Write down what is the minimum payment typically due for all of your bills, and what is the due date every month that they are due.

Now write down a list of all of your sources of income and what days of the month you receive this income. If your income is variable, then write down what you think is an average, or write down what is the bare minimum you know you can expect to receive on a consistent basis. The idea is to be consistent.

Now write down your flexible spending items such as groceries, transportation and fuel, entertainment, hobbies, recreational activities, household shopping, and savings.

If you do not put money into savings currently, go ahead and create a savings entry on your list anyway, and write down what you think is the absolute minimum you think you could afford to put away every month. But do not put zero.

Now you need to subtract your total expenses from your total income. This number needs to be greater than or equal to zero! If it is not, then you’ve got some serious planning to do with your budget. You’re going to need to find ways to reduce your expenses or to increase your income, or do both at the same time.

Now, every week or every pay period, you need to set aside your money and allocate it for each of these categories. If you come up short in one or more categories, this is where budgeting helps you to see the big picture as to why you may be having financial challenges in your life.

Learning how to create a household budget is essential to your financial well-being.
