How To Avoid Injuries From Running - By: ArticleSubmit Auto

Running is a fantastic way to exercise, and delivers a whole range of physical, mental and emotional benefits. However, running isn't without it's dangers. If you aren't careful, running can lead to several painful and frustrating injures that can keep you on the sidelines. In this article, you'll learn a few basic tips to stay healthy and injury free so you can run further, and more often.

The most important rule is to spend plenty of time stretching, both before and after your run. At the very least you should stretch out our calves, thighs, and hamstrings. While many people enjoy running because it's an activity you can fit in anywhere, don't skimp on the stretching. Limber muscles and tendons are less likely to strain and cause problems later down the line. Make it a habit of spending at least a few minutes before and after your run to stretch out.

Another point to consider is over training. Rest is just as important as exercise when it comes to physical fitness. There's no need to run ten miles every day at a five minute pace. Take some slow days, take some days off, or save the full throttle runs for the 10Ks on the weekends. One muscle pull or misplaced step can keep you from running for several weeks, so make sure to take it slow. The time you take off will help you to run further and faster when you do run.

Shoes are also important. Changing your shoes frequently is an important part of staying injury free. While a good pair of running shoes don't come cheap, there's no reason to squeeze every penny out of them. Change them often, at least twice a year if you run more than a few miles a week. This can keep your joints from suffering from the shock due to shoes that are past their prime. Many people buy a couple pairs at once and rotate them, to get a longer life.

Another important thing to consider is where you run. Obviously, some places are more dangerous than others, and can be very hazardous, especially if you run early in the morning, or late in the evening. Consider running on trails or roads where cars are scarce, and consider wearing some reflective material on your shirt. Getting run over by a cement truck will quickly end your running career.

Simple ideas, but when practiced regularly, you'll find they allow you to fully enjoy your running habit. You'll be able to run further, faster and without injury, getting you the maximum benefit possible.
