How Technology is Helping to Make Storage Heaters Even More Cost Effective - By: Kathryn Dawson

There can be little doubt that storage heaters have made a real impact in the home heating industry. The reasons include their ability to cut heating costs, to be installed with the minimum of fuss and having a lifespan that makes the initial cost of purchase a bargain. But with the advances in thermal technology made over the course of the last decade or so, both the energy and cost efficiency levels of the system have increased dramatically.

Every home owner wants a comfortable, secure and warm home, with winter storms and April rains only part of the weather factors that make an effective home heating system essential. While there are a number of heating systems run by different heating fuels, including oil, gas and solar power, electric storage heaters have been a favoured option for residential developers and home improvers alike.

And unsurprisingly, heater manufacturing companies have willingly invested in new ways to improve each generation of heaters. Amongst the leading versions are Creda storage heaters, which incorporate intricate sensors to ensure the most energy efficient versions yet.

There are several advantages to using storage heaters as opposed to gas or other heating systems in a home. On the basic level, the degree of comfort is much higher, with the heater releasing its stored heat at a given time in the morning, ensuring that residents wake up to a warm home. While another might turn on at the set time, take some time to heat up and then increase the room temperature, the storage system means that the heat is already waiting to be released and, therefore, heats a room faster.

Because this storage system is designed to operate during the night, the system requires no extra attention for the task. This means that the amount of maintenance needed by the heaters themselves is not high and, in fact, is much less than an equivalent gas or oil heating system, for example.

The installation is also much simpler as each heater is self regulating, meaning that it is not part of a linked system, such as electrical, oil and gas central heating systems. In each of these cases, a piping network has to be laid, stretching out from a central boiler and supporting water tank. This can be expensive and time consuming to install, after which it is susceptible to leaks and even corrosion over time.

To that extent, the storage option has been making heating so much more cost effective, but new models have made them even more effective. Thermostat switches have been an integral part of the system since its early years, with heaters switching off once a certain temperature is reached. However, their accuracy was not always as precise as one might have liked.

Now, manufacturers, such as leaders like Creda, have added far more reliable thermal sensors to ensure that the heater stops releasing heat exactly at the point that a preselected temperature is reached. Their TSR Sensor Plus model, for example, used two inbuilt sensors that monitor and react to input and output energy.

What this means is that the actual temperature of the storage blacks within the heater is controlled more effectively, thereby reducing the consumption of energy and overall electricity bill. Meanwhile, the release of heat is controlled in line with the consequential rise in room temperature, so less heat is wasted by the system. It is estimated that this system results in an overall reduction in energy consumption of 15 percent.

Of course, the benefits that these Creda storage heaters have to the environment are pretty clear to see, but for home owners there are two principal aspects to be happy about. First of all, there is an increased confidence that the amount of electricity being used to heat the storage heaters is the minimum that is required and, as a result, the overall costs of the system are lowered.

And secondly, the precision with which the output sensor operates on these electric storage heaters means that the luxury of a warm home is certain, without the temperature in a room or hallway getting uncomfortably high, while the risk of needlessly wasting heat through overheating is gone. In both cases, the efficiency of these heaters are at their highest ever.
