How Self Hypnosis Works - By: Tim Hansen

When we are little we seem to be easily able to stay focused at a task without being always interrupted with the distractions that tend to occur in adulthood. Just think of a little baby. During its first year, it will learn how to crawl, how to walk, to use a spoon, to talk, just to give you a few. If we compare that to a grown-up who has sustained grave injuries to the head in a car accident. It most likely will take him numerous years to learn again what the baby managed to achieve in only months. In the inital years of life, our brain tends not to be occupied with things that aren't necessary. It stays on the task until it is done, without distractions. That said, when we get older we begin acquiring knowledge and experiences like, when I put my hand on the hot stove it tends to hurt. So, the next time we see the hot stove we are programmed to be careful. This becomes one of our many beliefs, which can be very hard to ignore.

As we grow older we acquire numerous limitations in our heads, things we don't believe is reachable. It is almost impossible for a 300 lbs person to conceive that he will ever look down at the scales and see 120 lbs. Is it unachievable? Not at all. However this man has tried so many times to shed the weight and now his sub-concious mind has decided that it's not possible any more. Knowing how hypnosis works it is possible for him to alter his sub-conscious labelling and show it that it is in fact a possibility. Our sub-conscious mind is what creates our personality and determines of what will drive us.

The method of hypnosis has been around for ages. I'm confident you can all recall images of the dangling pocket watch that finally puts the subject to sleep. Self-hypnosis however, is not like that in the slightest. It is a technique to get rid of what is keeping the foot on the brake and holding us back from realizing optimum well-being. You may desire to go down a dress size, stop the cigarettes, or you may possibly be shy and have anxiety of public speaking. All these things can be transformed with self-hypnosis, by focusing on a specific thought and this will help you alter your habits.

You may have heard some say “No one could hypnotize me”. I firmly believe that everyone is receptive to hypnosis, but how effective it will be for you depends exclusively on how you take on the process of hypnosis. If you keep an open mind, chances are it will happen.

There are numerous elementary steps to the process of hypnosis. How they are completed is what makes one different to another. The first step is achieving sheer relaxation. This is not sleep, but anywhere in the middle between sleeping and being completely awake. Step number two is to focus your thoughts on an idea, a suggestion or maybe a specific phrase you have defined. During this step you will focus all your concentration on this suggestion and it usually comes with an increase of one or several of your senses, commonly labelled “hyperawareness” which is a perfectly normal part of the whole process when you gain the ability to focus all of your concentration whilst still relaxing completely. It's quite common to experience R.E.M, short-hand for rapid eye movement during this stage of the process, however it doesn't mean that you are sleeping. During self-hypnosis you can wake up whenever you want, unlike normal sleep.

We want self hypnosis to delete the all our unwanted habits and our struggles and we have to force the sub-conscious into submission. It will initiate this process, however your own conscious mind will provide the needed willpower. Without it, great changes in the way you think would not take place and hypnosis would be impossible without perseverance and allegiance to persist until you reach you goals.
