How Mobile Phone Recycling Works After your send your phone away - By: Felicity Lightbody

Before one begins to look into the various processes involved in mobile phone recycling, the most important answer to the question of 'how mobile phone recycling works' is of course that when properly disposed of, there is an immediate and positive effect on the environment because when mobile phones end up in landfills, there are components which allow dangerous chemical emissions to escape into the very air we breathe.

There is no reason to be concerned about personal data stored in one's phone since the internet is filled with sites offering 'data erasure tools' which anybody can easily use before the unit actually reaches the recycling phase. All one needs to do to insure that this very important step takes place is to locate a website and enter the make and model of the unit which will quickly give very easy instructions to successfully complete this process.
Once the unit reaches the recycling centre, the first step is composed of dismantling the basic components. The four basic components are: flash memory, plastic, metals, and casings often referred to as the housing.

Following the dismantling process, a second sorting takes place during which batteries, circuit boards, handsets, chargers and accessories, are placed in special sorting bins, one for each of the components. There are even special bins for the packaging used to transport the mobile phone from the sender to the recycling centre. The packaging container is broken down and sorted into paper, cardboard, and plastic cushioning such as the ever- popular 'bubble wrap' used in our modern world.

Batteries are processed for Nickel which can then be recycled into stainless steel used in so many appliances and applications both for home and industrial use. It is interesting to note that even batteries can be recycled into new batteries once the Cadmium is extracted.
Batteries also contain a certain amount of copper which can be recycled in numerous ways and for numerous purposes. Circuit boards contain a wealth of valuable metals such as gold, silver, copper and lead which can be used in many ways while preserving the earth from extensive and unsightly mining operations involved in acquiring these metals.

Even phone casings which are normally made from plastic, once recycled can be used in very attractive ways one comes into contact with on a daily basis such as plastic fencing used to decorate the landscaping of individual homes and businesses.
