How Many Dancers Are There At Dance Auditions? - By: Ryan Heddik

Once you make that step of deciding you want to become a dancer, dance auditions and castings will become a part of your schedule. How many other dancers are you likely to be in competition with and how good are your chances?

Well of course every audition is different. In general an open dance audition where anyone can attend will be much busier than a closed audition by invite only or through a dance agent.

It would be a very accurate general assumption to say that the more desirable the part, the more dancers there are likely to be at the audition. So an audition to be one of Janet Jackson's dancers on her world tour is likely to attract several hundreds to even thousands of dancers.

There have been stories of auditions for very well-known music artists where people queue through the night to audition. Queues spanning right around the block and dancers being invited into the audition room 100 at a time. Even then it takes the whole day to get through the whole audition and for them to see all the dancers.

This is the extreme. For smaller parts say to be a part of an ensemble in a theatre show there'll probably be a lot of dancers, maybe hundreds, maybe less.

Auditions to join a dance agency when their books are open can also be very busy. There are lots of people who are trying to 'make it' in dance and it is not unheard of for there to be hundreds to thousands of dancers at open agency auditions. Open auditions of any sort are always likely to be busy.

Now going to the other end, many auditions for very big jobs can have only maybe 20 or 30 people auditioning for the roles. Some producers and casting directors prefer not to have to see large amounts of people and may make their initial cuts just be looking at the pictures of the dancers.

You'll probably attend quite a few auditions where there'll be smaller numbers of people. The number attending also depends upon how many roles they're looking to fill. If they need 40 dancers there's probably going to be a lot more dancers auditioning than if they need 2.

Sometimes the word will not get out that quickly about the audition and there won’t be many people turning up.

Some auditions will have several rounds of callbacks and if you are invited to a callback then there'll obviously be fewer dancers as they would have cut many and will be looking to take a closer look at you.

There's lots of desirable jobs in dance, and where there's desire there'll be dancers.
