How Many Dance Agents Do You Need? - By: Ryan Heddik

If you're in the dance industry you're probably aware of how useful having a dance agent can be. How many dance agents is enough though?

Well if you can it makes sense to get onto as many non-exclusive dance agencies as you can. A non-exclusive dance agency means that you can be a part of their agency and you won’t be tied to them – meaning you can be with other dance agencies and agents as well.

With exclusive dance agencies you may want to do your research a bit more carefully to see which one is right for you. No agency can guarantee you work (if they're legitimate) but some can get you better and more quality work than others.

Things to consider with exclusive dance agencies include what type of dance styles they get work for. If you're a jazz dancer then it makes sense to be with an agency that frequently provides jazz dancers for clients. You may also want to consider who their choreographers are, how many dancers are on their books, even who the other dancers are.

Also it's also important to consider the personal level. If you know the people who run the agency or the agent then it's much more likely that they will think of you when it comes to jobs. If an agency talent spotted you they're probably very interested in you and promoting you.

Knowing the agent beforehand is not everything of course. You can build a relationship with them. If you do dance jobs sent to you from an agency, that's good for the agents because they get paid commission for every job they send you on! And you can bet if you're regularly successful at auditions for well paid jobs that they'll keep sending you to more auditions.

Now moving onto non-exclusive dance agencies – well you can be with as many as you like. Like with all agencies it pays to do a little bit of research though. Look for agencies that do the type of work that you’re after and find out where they're based.

If you're looking for work in TV and music videos but audition for an agency that specialises in theatre work or cruise ships you're wasting your time going to their agency audition.

So go look for the agencies you want to be with, and once you're ready go audition for them and look forward to lots of work (hopefully)!
