Hormonal changes contribute largely to the development of this disease. By and large, osteoporosis is caused by the depletion of certain hormones that result from aging. If hyperthyroidism is left untreated, it may also cause bones to become weak and brittle. Partly, the toughness of your bones depend on the amount of calcium and other materials accumulated in them. Too much thyroid hormone interferes with your body’s capacity to store calcium into your bones.

In a manner which is still not clearly explained, patients with diabetes – especially type 1 – experience rapid bone loss making them a high risk for osteoporosis. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by either a decrease in production of insulin or a resistance of the body towards the hormone insulin. Having a routine assessment on your bone mineral density, therefore, is essential if you are dealing with osteoporosis.

By understanding how hormones can influence the development of osteoporosis, you can have a gist on how it can be treated. It has been recently reported that Fosamax, the most widely prescribed treatment for osteoporosis, is said to cause serious adverse effects including an atypical thigh bone fracture triggering harmed individuals to file a Fosamax lawsuit.
