How Important Is Building Trust Online? - By: peterbennett

How true is it about the simple phrase "life wasn't meant to be easy" but does that mean it always have to be hard.

Coming from a corporate background predominantly in the field of sales, there is a key to success that should never be ignored or taken for granted.

If you haven't guessed it already, the key is trust.

There are many definitions of trust but to put it simply trust is a "Firm reliance on the integrity, ability, or character of a person or thing"

In the outside world businesses come and go but there is only one direction it can go if trust does not form the nucleus of the relationship.

Just as people will not or at least should not buy from you if they don't like you, there is little chance of any long term relationships developing either.

When we talk about the internet, there are even more challenges than already exist in the offline world.

The building of trust should be the first thing you need to establish when venturing into the cyber world.

Human nature dictates that the public are cautious. A lot of people have had experience with the slick marketers over promising and under delivering and sceptism is the end result... and rightly so.

As a consumer, my advice is to only deal with people you feel you can trust and make sure that you have taken the time to get to know someone.

Prospective customers often operate on a level of paranoia and distrust because of bad experiences over the internet. Don't fight this battle.

It's the enviroment we choose to be in. Lets tidy things up and implement startegies that can turn things around.

With these sorts of odds seemingly stacked against you, how do you beat them??

A great spot to start is to simply be yourself. Don't try and be something your not. . .

Make your web page attractive, personable and user friendly. This will be most people's first impression so it counts. It does not have to be the best but it needs to relay to the viewer a bit of who you are.

Trust that people will appreciate who you are so be open about yourself.

It always surprise me how many people want to rush the building of a relationship. take your time.

" Make sure your web page is personable and up to date.
" Make sure your contact details are published.
" Add testimonials and pictures where possible.
" Keep a blog to share more of yourself.
" Associate your sales sites with credibility and offer security for comfort.
" For businesses, provide your privacy regualtions via a link .
" Maintain consistency when branding yourself for credibility.
" Go the extra yard when it comes to customer service.
" Provide information that is both objective and transparent.
" Give people what they want before giving what you want.
" Take your time, build relationships and the trust will come.
" Treat users the same way you would enjoy being treated.

My last advice is for people developing businesses on the ever growing social sites.

Don't send sales pitches as your only communication. Selling by hit and miss strategies and using the probability of success as the answer does not spell trust. But that's only my opinion.

In closing, the shear fact people and businesses have the ability to hide who they really are can sometimes bring the worst out of people.
In the end, your success will come down to honesty, transparency and your trustworthiness.

Every step we take, every decision we make will determine the level of trust we are able to obtain!

Implement just some of these steps and enjoy the outcome. It may surprise you..
