The earliest record of ice hockey was found in the seventeenth century on Dutch publications. But a theory, which is widely spread and received is that the field hockey is the predecessor of ice hockey. Hockey originated in northern Europe, has more than five hundred years history. The British troops quartered in Canada brought this sport to North America.

On December 25, 1855 in Canada, the first game was held in Kingston. The sport of ice hockey preached to Europe in 1858. In 1860, Canada began to use rubber disc-shaped ice hockey. The first official hockey game was held in Montreal Victoria of Canada On March third, 1875, the game was carried out between two teams in McGill University. On the court, there were thirty players at that time. In 1879, Canada McGill University students, Professor Robertson and Smith work out the rules of the game. They require that each team can have nine players in a game. In Canada, hockey quickly became the most popular item. In 1885, the first Amateur Hockey Association was established; people who like playing hockey can attend it. However, it was unreasonable that the Association collected a fee from amateurs. Afterwards people in the United States and Europe began to play the sport of ice hockey. Seven years later, the Hockey League of the United States was established. In 1967, only six teams participate in the game. NHL has become the world's professional and commercial league recently.

In 1912, Canadian National Hockey Association first introduced the method of playing with six people, and is used by the International Ice Hockey League until now. Women's ice hockey began in the 1860s. In Toronto, Ontario, the first women's ice hockey game was held in 1892.
