How Healthy Bowels Function and Leaky Gut Syndrome are Related - By: Deborah Flemming

Americans and people around the world today are exposed to many more toxic and poisonous substances and foods than any other time in history. The fact is that it is not the preparation of our food that is killing us, but that the foods we tend to eat nowadas is over processed. Because of the over processing of our food, the microorganisms that we need to have for good digestive health simply are not provided. Leaky Gut Syndrome or Leaky bowels, as it is sometimes reffered to, is primarily linked to when our bodies don´t receive the proper amounts of bacteria needed in the intestines.

Digestion is actually a straightforward process – food is eaten and moves through the body. At different stages within the process, nutrients and minerals are taken out and distributed to the relevant organs by way of our circulatory system. We need this bacteria for the extraction process to complete itself in our bodies. It is also required that there be a balance between the “good” and “bad” bacteria in your body’s intestines. This delicate balance between the good bacteria and bad bacteria is needed to maintain healthy bowel function. You see,the good bacteria helps us to digest food, while maintaining a healthy gut. They also provide us with nutrients and vitamins, and fight off the bad bacteria. When this balance is upset – either eating certain foods or through antibiotics which attack and kill both good and bad bacteria - our bodies could suffer from the symptoms of Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Always keep in mind that healthy bowels sustain a balanced combination of good and bad bacteria. But this balance is delicate at most and can easily be destroyed. There are several things that can upset this balance including sugary and processed foods, alcohol, drugs (including prescription antibiotics) and even stress. Not to mention, food preservatives and additives that are sometimes even toxic to good bacteria and can impair their growth. When the balance of bacteria tips toward the bad, one can experience irritation and inflammation of the intestinal lining. When this happens the intestines become compromised and no longer function properly, toxins and poisons start to leak into the bloodstream causing all sorts of harmful complications.

These toxins and poisons are not just the fungi and parasites that the intestines already filtered but can also include undigested foodstuffs even proteins and fats! There are a variety of symptoms associated with Leaky Gut Syndrome that range from, constipation, diarrhea, gas, indigestion, cramping and other gastrointestinal pains including heartburn. The worse part is that, as toxins escape the intestines and are transferred through the bloodstream, they can lodge themselevs in other organs throughout the entire body causing further and sometimes fatal complications.

Restore the balance between good and bad bacteria, can be as simple as taking probiotic supplements Simply changing your diet is an effective way to restore the correct balance of bacteria needed in our bodies. Not all "bad bacteria" is really "bad". Take Candida for example. It exist and is fine in small quantities but when the balance of bateria is disturbed, it becomes a problem when their numbers increase uncontrollably. Healthy bowel function like so many other systems in our bodies requires a give and take if you will or in this case the good bacteria holding the bad bacteria in balance. If the balance is tipped in the wrong way, the "bad bacteria," such as, yeasts, and fungi and other undesiables will grow and multiply, causing all sorts of health problems.
