How Graphics Cards Work - By: Greg Long

The graphics card is basically one of the most important expansion cards which is inserted into the motherboard of the computer and provides certain additional functions to the computer system. The graphics card is also known as the video adapter, video card, display adapter or graphics accelerator card. The main function of the graphics card is to generate images which can be displayed n the computer's screen.

The images that are displayed on the computer's screen are made up of millions of pixels. The computer decides on how to use these pixels so that the image can be created. For doing this, the computer uses a translator to convert the binary data taken from the computer's CPU into an image. The graphics card is the main component which helps in this translation. Below mentioned are some of the points which will help you to understand the working of the graphics card-

For understanding the basic work of a graphics card let us assume that the computer is like a business firm which has an art department of its own. The request is send to the art department whenever the company needs an art work. Now, it completely depends on the art department on how to design and come up with an image which can be viewed by the people.

The graphics card functions on the exact same principles. The CPU works hand in hand with the software applications. The information elated to the image is sent to the graphics card and then the graphics card plans on how to make use of the pixels to come up with a viewable image. After the image is created, the graphics card transfers the image to the computer's monitor with the help of a cable.

Making a viewable image with the help of the binary data is a challenging task. To make 3-D images, a frame is created by the graphics card with the help of the straight lines. Then the graphics card starts filling in the pixels and the light, color and texture are added to the image. While you are playing a fast game, this process of making the images takes place at least 60 times in a second. If the graphics card stops calculating, the work would not be easy for the computer to complete.

For completing the process the graphics card uses the motherboard for the power and data, a processor for deciding on how to use the pixels, memory to store the information on each of the pixels and monitor to view the final product.
