How Good is the DEWALT 745? - By: Hal Hendricks

If you are in the market for a portable table saw, whether as a contractor who will use it on job sites or as a hobbyist woodworker who will set it up for weekend projects and then store it a corner of the garage for the rest of the week, you know there are a lot of saws to choose from. The DEWALT 745 is one of those saws. DEWALT is a well-known brand, and they have been making saws for a long time. Does the DW745 ride on the coat tails of its brand, or is it a really good saw?

What You Get for Your Money

- 15 amp, high torque motor, allowing you to easily cut hardwoods or pressure treated woods
- 16 inches of rip to easily cut larger trim materials and shelving
- Rack and pinion fence rails, making adjustments accurate, smooth, and easy
- High quality 10 inch, 24 tooth carbide blade
- Miter gauge for cuts from 0 to 45 degrees
- Dust port for 2-1/2? vacuum hook up
- 3 year limited warranty, 1 year service contract, and 90 day money back guarantee

It has a solid warranty, which means it’s a highly reliable saw. Let’s face it; a company isn’t going to offer a long-term warranty unless they’re pretty sure the customer won’t have a reason to use it during that time.

The 16 inches of rip is adequate but you have to take into account this is a 45 pound portable saw, designed to be thrown into the back of a truck and then toted around a job site. Combine the rip with a blade height of just over 3 inches, and you have a saw that will be able to perform just about any cutting task you can think of, from 2x8 pieces of hardwood to plywood to laminates.

The 15 amp motor provides the power to make those cuts without bogging down, although you can overload it, risking kickback. However, common sense dictates that you are going to use the DEWALT 745 only as it’s meant to be used. The powerful motor does have a drawback, in that it’s fairly noisy, but most saws are, so if you wear ear protection, this should be no issue.

The fence gets universally high marks from users. The rack and pinion system means that the rails move while the fence remains square. It is easy to set up and use, and once it is properly setup, it remains where you set it. It’s not going to slowly slip out of adjustment as you use the saw.

The one weakness of the DEWALT DW745 is the miter gauge. Users report that it is cheap and flimsy. If you never make anything but 90 degree cuts this will be no issue. If you regularly make miter cuts, you will probably want to replace this gauge with a good third-party miter gauge.

Are you a contractor that needs a reliable portable saw that cuts accurately to use on job sites? Are you a hobbyist with limited space and a limited budget but still want good power for larger pieces of wood? If the answer to these questions is “yes” then the DEWALT 745 is more than good enough to fill your needs. Give it a look. You won’t be disappointed.
