How Does Wind Power Actually Function? - By: Joe Heinemann

Utilizing the wind to produce energy is gaining in popularity but perhaps you would like to understand just how it really works. It appears easy but there are many components required in generating wind power. Wind power is extremely precious for us because it can greatly reduce the pressures on our planet and it also saves us money on our bills.

For most of us, wind just looks invisible and does not really have any properties but in reality, air is a fluid that contains particles constructed of gas. This is unlike other fluids that are made up of liquid particles. We can turn these gas particles into energy because as the wind blows, kinetic energy is produced which then can be harnessed and changed over into power.

In order to capture this wind power, blades are utilized which are joined to a shaft. Then the shaft is hooked up to some type of generator which produces useable power by shifting the wind energy to electricity. At it's essence, wind power is some kind of energy that is captured and converted into a different kind of energy.

Gaining access to wind is very important for this process to work but another essential component is the blades that are used. These blades are produced aerodynamically similar to a airplane wing. This design is really critical to maximize the effectiveness of the generator but something else is also important. The other critical factor is simply the diameter of the blade. The blade size shapes the amount of electrical energy that is ultimately produced because the larger the blade, the more energy is captured.

By using a blade diameter that is twice the size of another, we can gain power output by up to four times! Much will also depend on where you live to determine the correct blade size. If you are located someplace where you do not have access to much wind, you would be better off with using smaller blades because the low wind flow will be able to rotate them faster then big blades. On the other hand, if it is constantly very windy in your area, using the largest blades you can is ideal because you will create the most energy this way.

There is obviously more involved with how wind power is made but this gives you the fundamental principles of how electricity is created from the wind. In the near future, wind energy will be a good deal more common and will be utilized by not only big companies but also by homeowners. It is a great idea to learn as much about this great energy resource as possible.
