How Does A Pregnancy Pillow Support You During You Pregnancy? - By: Rebecca Christensen

Most women will have to go through it. The 9 months of being pregnant can be very enjoyable, but at times, pain can make things difficult. In the first trimester you will most likely be experiencing other symptoms such as morning sickness and increased appetite, whereas in the second and third trimester, pain is much more common. The most common forms of pain associated with pregnancy is lower back pain and groin/pubic area pain. The reason for the increase in back pain in the second trimester is that as the stomach grows the pelvis tilts forward and this causes the joints of the lower back to get impacted. This is made worse by the fact that a pregnant body releases copious amounts of the hormone relaxing which makes the ligaments, muscles and other tissues of the lower back and pelvis more relaxed. Over time, the joint become inflamed and this leads to pain from that area.

Most pregnant women experience a dull type pain which is relatively constant, but worse when rising from a seated or lying position. This indicates a chemically mediated pain which is generated when the chemicals released by your body due to inflammation causes an irritation of the chemically mediated pain receptors in the lower back joints and muscles.

Later in pregnancy, more specifically in the third trimester your belly has grown so much that its weight is starting to push down on the pubic bone. This can easily causes inflammation at this joint which can very painful, particularly when walking or rising from a seated position. There are no specific solutions to pubic bone pain. You best bet would be to get hold of a specialised pregnancy belt which creates a compressive force around your pelvis, without compressing your stomach. This causes the pubic sympysis to be held in place and prevents it from spraining.

There are also good value in getting hold of a specialised pregnancy pillow that you can have in bad with you. For obvious reasons, pregnant women can not sleep on their stomach and as they grow bigger, find it difficult to lie on their stomach as the baby compresses their internal organs. Therefore, most women are left with only one option, sleeping on their side. This can be uncomfortable in the last trimester as the belly is growing too big and needs to be supported whilst lying on the side. A pregnancy pillow goes between the mattress and the belly and gently lifts it up and supports it while the woman is sleeping.
