How Do Infrared Heaters Work - By: Rae Houchard

Heard of infrared heater? Is it an electric heater? Do you use infrared heater for a business or for a home? Why would you want to buy infrared heater? What other options are there for heating? Is infrared heater safe for a home with children? All these questions about the infrared heater? Let's see if we can answer some of them!

You've probably heard about infrared light from science. Science taught about infrared light when you study different wave-lengths. There's also infrared-radiation talk on TV and magazines as well as infrared-technology. But, none of that probably rings a bell when you try to figure out what infrared heater is and how infrared heater works.

First of all, infrared light is invisible because infrared is beyond the light spectrum that our eyes can pick up. The infrared heater produces heat from infrared light which you can't see. Even though you can't see infrared light, you can feel infrared heat from an infrared heater because clothing and skin absorb infrared light. An example of the heat from an infrared heater is the difference of sitting in the sun or sitting under a shady tree. When you're in the shade the infrared light from the sun can't reach your skin as well as when you're in the heat of the direct sunlight.

There are different types of infrared heaters. One infrared heater may direct its heat at one object or one room so that the infrared heater focuses on heating one part of a home. Another type of infrared heater has several parts that get the heat out. The infrared heater creates the heat from infrared light-bulbs and maybe a fan then blows air over and out from the infrared heater, creating warm air, which is much like a forced air furnace, only instead of gas and fire you're using infrared light with an infrared heater.

The infrared heater can be rather large for an industrial space or small enough to heat a home or even smaller to heat one room. The small infrared heater would be known as a space heater. Depending on the size and use of an infrared heater, there are several different materials that the infrared heater is made of. Some examples of infrared heater materials are ceramic and copper. There are also different types of resources producing infrared light to produce heat. Infrared light-bulbs is only one example.

One advantage to using the infrared heater is that the infrared heater is environmentally friendly. The infrared heater may also use less energy than say an electric heater or a natural gas heater.

The infrared heater would probably not be safe to have with unsupervised children around since an infrared heater can become very hot and would be dangerous for a child to fall on or to put his/her fingers into the space where infrared heat comes out. A child could get burned easily around an infrared heater.

Reasons for buying the infrared heater for heating a room or a home instead of or in addition to central air is that the infrared heater could be more economically sensible.
