In the simplest of terms, hybrids run on both gas and electric power sources to get from A to B. First of all, the electric portion of the engine is used when you're idling and the gasoline engine is automatically shut off. This means the hybrid is an electric car while sitting in traffic or at lights. This will explain why hybrid cars are very quiet. This is also why hybrids are so fuel efficient. Once a driver presses down on the gas pedal, this is when the internal combustion engine comes back to life. Some hybrids actually that are able to run on electric power primarily for longer periods. This is an especially desirable feature who don't venture too far from home with their cars. You may not even need to put gasoline in the car.

However, in a hybrid, you'll need to gas up the vehicle before taking a trip longer than 50 miles. You can even say that the gasoline will be used for back up power in case the battery is discharged. That's all there is– just a battery for energy storage, a generator, a combustion engine, a gas tank, plus a motor that's electric. That is why it is called a 'Hybrid'.

Now that you know more about hybrids, you hopefully have a better idea of why they're so popular. You will not only cut down on the amount of fuel you put into your gas tank each month, but you will also be doing your part to help preserve and protect the environment.
