How Do Decals Work? - By: AminRamjee

Have you ever wondered how decal customization works, or asked yourself what is a decal? Decals are plastic, cloth paper or ceramic substrate that has printed patterns on it for the purpose of transferring it to another surface. Transferring must be done with the assistance of heat or water. The term decal is short for decalcomania and has been prevalent in customization since the mid-1700's. This concept has translated to modern times well and is commonly used on glass, ceramic material and other hard yet smooth surfaces. Using decals is a popular way to creatively decorate items like cars, guitars, ceramic coffee mugs and glassware items.

Heat transfer uses high temperature to fuse decals to items like coffee mugs and glassware items. Ceramic items can have decals fused onto them with extremely high temperatures while glassware items can only reach moderate temperatures before melting. The higher the heat used for decal customization the more fusion occurs with decals and their customized item. Water decals simply need to be wet and stuck on a particular item, they are then removed and display the image printed on the decal. There is a third type of decal which is called a peel-and-stick which has a sticker-like application which is peeled off without the need of water or heat.

Decals are often used for customizing promotional products. Hundreds and even thousands of items can be customized through heat transfer decals, water-slide decals and peel-and-stick decals. Items which can use heat transfer decals include t-shirts, coffee mugs and glassware. Items that can use water-slide decals include coffee mugs, travel mugs, glassware and more. And peel-and-stick decals can be used on just about anything with a hard surface. Decal customization may be a concept that is hundreds of years old but has a value that resonates even with contemporary customization.
