Breaking a habit requires full dedication, patience, a whole lot of strength and willpower and also your personal discipline. Step 2: You can't go from biting all your nails to not biting at all, so pick a few fingers to work with first and slowly get rid of the habit. Get a little notebook and write down which two or three fingers you'd like to keep from biting, the reason you write it down is so that you can't reason with yourself to make allowances and compromises based on the fingernails you bite today and tomorrow. If you're successful in protecting the nails of the fingers which you wrote down, go on the increase it to five fingers, eight fingers and eventually all ten.

Step 3: Make a change in your dietary plans by adding more calcium and magnesium rich foods to your meals. They help promote nail growth and assist in nail repair as well, if you can't find ways to help change your meal plan then just try having a glass of milk every morning or night before bed. Every little bit of calcium and magnesium helps. Sometimes, the reason you bite your nails in the first place could be due to the lack of these nutrients in your body and you try to gain it back through chewing your nails which doesn't actually help your body the way real food can.

Step 4: Change the habit. Since you don't want to be biting, you should do something else to distract yourself so that your hands won't go to your mouth. Try picking up a hobby that will keep your hands busy be it crotchet, gardening, carving or even vase making. Whatever it is, keep your hands out of sight by indulging in hands on activities or you could replace the habit with something else such as drumming your fingers, tapping your nails or anything else so long as it's a healthy habit.

Step 5: Take note of the changes as you make progress towards quitting the habit. As a nail biter, it would be quite exciting to see your nails grow and it's something you can be proud of, so when you notice progress, take a picture and let it be a reminder about what you're working towards. It can be your little source of motivation, so notice these changes and appreciate it too. When you've learn to stop biting, you can treat yourself to a good and relaxing manicure.
