How Can You Tell When Someone is Lying? NLP Eyes May Be the Answer. - By: Elizabeth Parker

There is an amazing connection between eye movement and the part of the brain that processes information that gives tremendous insight on the question “how can you tell when someone is lying?” This phenomenon is called NLP eyes or NLP eye accessing cues. Your eyes actually reveal important information about what is going on in the mind.

So, how can you tell when someone is lying by using these NLP eye accessing cues? You will find that most people look left when they are remembering something and to the right when they are creating something new. So when you ask someone to remember an even or experience they will look to the left as they are processing that information. Now, if they are constructing new information they will look to the right.

Of course these are generalizations and don't apply to 100% of the population. These cues appear to be consistent for those that are "normally organized" within the mind. Also the cues can be opposite for people who are left handed. You can see if the cues are reversed by asking someone to remember something that you are both familiar with and see which direction their eyes drift.

NLP eyes have cues for visual (images), auditory analog (tones, tempo, pitch), auditory digital (inner self talk), and kinesthetic (touch and emotions). When someone is remembering an image they will look up and to the left. If they are constructing an image they will look up and to the right. When someone is remembering a sound they will look sideways and to left. If they are imagining a new sound they will look sideways and to the right. With internal talk they will look down and to the left, and when processing emotions they will look down and to the right. If, however, they stay focused directly in front of them then they are more than likely accessing something visually.

Again, these are generalizations and won't work 100% of the time, but using these cues will give you a window into the way someone processes information. Not only can you tell if someone is actually remembering something or constructing something new, but you can also tell how they communicate. By observing their eye patterns you will learn if they process information using images, sounds, self talk, or emotions. Understanding how they process information helps you communicate more effectively. Let's say you are talking to someone who appears to process information using images. It would be much more effective for you to use words like "can you see" or "picture this" rather than "how do you feel abut that" or "how does that sound." They will be able to process what you are saying much faster and understand better because you are matching the way they process with your vocabulary.

Understanding and incorporating NLP eyes into your day to day life will help you understand and communicate much more effectively. It’s a simple yet powerful tool that can enrich your interactions with others.
