Osteoporosis has now affected many people across social standing and ethnic groups . In America, there are around 10 million suffering from it and there are millions more who are at risk of experiencing the disease. This has made the medical industry to research more about foods that can prevent osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis can be treated in many different ways. One of the options is the use of osteoporosis drugs. However, things will not work well if one will rely on medical therapy alone. It also needs a right diet, a healthy lifestyle, and some regular weight-bearing exercises.

Weight-bearing exercise refers to an activity you do while on your feet and legs, with involvement of your muscles and bones against gravity. The pull of the muscle plus your weight imposes tension to your bones in these types of activities. As a result, your body responds by increasing your bone mineral density, which strengthens your bones.

Here are some simple but equally good weight-bearing exercises:

Tai Chi and Yoga

Tai chi is a form of slow and graceful movement which builds both coordination and strong bones. In alike manners, certain yoga postures develop your back muscles that preserve the health of your spine while working on your balance, coordination, concentration and body awareness that will help reduce the risk for falls. Through studies, both exercises have already been proven to increase bone mineral density, especially when done regularly.

Brisk Walking and Hiking

Walking and hiking are probably the most popular fitness trends especially in women. Brisk walking may be the best, but you can adjust your tempo to what your body can handle. Hiking is pretty similar with walking only with a little more impact, especially when going uphill or downhill.

Golf and Racquet Sports

In sports, golf and racquet sports, such as tennis and badminton, are very effective in improving your bone mineral density. All the walking and swinging of the club when playing golf will surely improve your bone strength. Hitting the ball develops your shoulder while running around develops your hips and your spine during a game of racquet sports.

Before engaging to any of these weight-bearing exercises, ask your doctor if you are allowed to do such activities, especially if bone thinning has already started in your case. Also, we need to remember that these activities are not to replace your medications, especially bisphosphonate drugs like Fosamax. We are already aware that the unwanted effects other people have sustained, causing them to file a Fosamax lawsuit, yet, this would not be enough reason for you to cease your therapy especially, without your physician’s knowledge.
