How Camping Trips Make Perfect Breaks for Kids - By: Bruno Blackstone

Discovering a satisfactory holiday to please all of the members of the family is often quite a daunting challenge. More years ago than I care to mention when my little ones were still young I was generally reluctant to take them abroad, and didn’t until they were both in their teens. I knew how tiring high temperatures and activity could be, meaning that even long after growing out of having an afternoon rest it was better to let them take one or suffer the other option – ill temmpered young ones. Though, I am no skin flint when it comes to holidays I didn’t see the sense of paying out my hard earned funds on a well-earned break and then sitting down in a hotel bed room whilst the little ones had a siesta.

We regularly rented a holiday let to discover someplace in our own country we’d not visited before, actually we now possess such a property so obviously we frequently urge other folks to sample it (have a look at the Places to Stay page on our web site). Despite this, we furthermore made the decision to investigate the world of camping and I’m definitely glad we did.

Whenever we all went camping I always attempted to select somewhere where there was lots to keep the young ones busy and safe and sound so that my spouse and I were able to catch up on our reading, or the complete family group might frequent neighbouring places of interest. One point about camping is that it is rather easy to move on to a further site if the one you’re on does not suit you or you’ve done and seen every thing there is to do and experience. A number of the most unforgettable trips we’ve enjoyed were at places that were relatively basic but in the centre of stunning countryside.

The members of the family who experienced the most from our camping weekends were the young ones. Our son especially, slotted in to this lifestyle perfectly and it become quite normal for him to go off for a couple of hours only to reappear hot, thirsty, hungry and filthy with a load of other youngsters following on. He’d be fed and watered then off he’d go again with his retinue to continue whatever adventure activity they'd been taking part in. In those halcyon years we had no need to be concerned concerning where they all were as all the other mothers and fathers would be keeping a watchful but discreet eye on them, as we did.

On a specific occasion we were at a place where there was a club house with entertainment, however as we did not much care for it we pitched our tent a long way away from it. It happened to be one of those beautifully warm summers’ evenings where you can sit out of doors well into the night. We lit a modest bonfire and cooked a few potatoes, by which time there was once again an array of kids gathered all around. After despatching them off to pick up sticks to feed the bonfire we all stayed around taking part in charade-type games my wife and I furnishing the stories for all the children to act out. Mothers and fathers seeking to go to the club house were ignored and no-one wanted to leave when it was time for sleep, they were having such a wonderful time. Once all had gone silent we relaxed back in our seats watching the night sky and witnessed our first shooting star.

So, camping – not just for the little ones to enjoy!
