How Audio and Visual Cables Work - By: Kyle Hartley

Got a load of cables and wondering what they are for? Well, if you have ever purchased a HiFi, TV, set of speakers or home cinema system then you will probably have at least read the term a number of times in your instruction manuals or online when searching product reviews and looking for the product you wish to purchase. The concept itself is simple. Audio and visual cables are what allow connectivity between devices that produce either sound, images, or both.

One example is your television. Your TV is likely to have a number of ports, plugs and sockets which allow for connectivity with other devices. For example, a growing market regarding TV is the home cinema market. Home cinema allows you to experience cinema surround sound in your own home. These packages often include numerous speakers. Not only will this provide you with surround sound but it will also increase the quality and volume of the sound emitted by your TV.

No longer will you have to put up with tinny music videos and quiet explosions on your favourite movies. Instead, you will be able to hear and feel thumping bass lines and feel the rumble of explosions. However, the cinema system needs a way of communicating with your TV. The system obviously cannot simply magically pick up the sound from your TV. They have to connect to each other. The result is that new TVs now come with a variety of different ports that will allow it to interact with other devices.

It is essential to have the correct cable in order to connect your device with the correct port. This will then allow the two devices to work together. The result is that when using an audio cable with your TV and a surround sound system is that the sound then plays out of your new improved audio system rather than through the inferior TV system. Other common devices that require audio and visual cables are products such as DVD players. In the same vein is cable boxes and satellite receivers.

Other products such as stereo systems will also require cables in order to connect to speakers to play sound from. There are various categories of audio and visual cables. Some types included are jack cables. These cables come with a variety of different sizes, such as 2.5mm, 3.5mm and 6.35mm. Always ensure you have the correct size. Other types of cable include QED cables and audio speaker cable. Phono leads are common but there are now digital audio cables and digital optical cables that are getting more popular.

One of the most common nowadays is an HDMI cable. This is most often seen in the use of TVs. There are also TV cables and USB cables. The important thing with all of these is that you always know in advance what type of lead you require. The wrong lead will not fit your device. In the worst case scenario you may damage your device. Once you know the correct type of cable to purchase, you will then need to check the size. Always get the right size for your device.
