House Cleaning Now is Time to Organize the Master Bedroom - By: Jerri Voteur

I have a secret when it comes to cleaning the house much faster than I can normally do it, and in addition it's done right so that I'm both relaxed and part of the job done when it's finished.

The first thing we're going to work on is the master bedroom. The bedroom itself should be a sanctuary and an escape. Your room isn't going to be a sanctuary for you if you're uncomfortable in it for some reason or the decor isn't right for you. Remember that the way to get through this it is with tiny steps.

Take a look at your bedroom, critically. Does it have clutter in it? What's the first thing you notice about it? If, for example, there are dirty clothes on the floor and that's what you notice first, put those in a basket. Do the first thing you notice, quickly, so that you get it done.

If your bedroom takes advantage of the "law of flat surfaces," this is something you're going to need to address. Most if not all of your flat surfaces are going to have to be clear, so address those. Is the headboard cluttered? Take everything off the headboard except for what absolutely has to be there, like a lamp or a box of Kleenex. Do this with every other flat surface in your bedroom. Keep two containers with you. One container should have all the garbage tossed into it, and one container should have all of the "file or put away" items put into it. Put the items away once you're done with this "flat surface reclamation," and then go over everything with a duster or cloth so that it's dust free.

Your headboard and dresser, as well as other flat surfaces in your bedroom, should be clutter free now except for everything that "lives" on those surfaces, like the lamp or box of Kleenex we talked about previously. If they're still cluttered, take a critical look at what you've got there and determine what you might get rid of. Can you consolidate jewelry boxes, or maybe tuck them away in a drawer? Is there old jewelry that you might want to get rid of? Whatever you can clear off of the headboard or other flat surfaces so that it looks clear and uncluttered is going to be your goal. Of course, you also don't want to simply cram drawers with "hidden" clutter, either, so make sure you get rid of anything you don't need, use or love. Toss those perfume bottles with "just a little" left in them that you never use, or get rid of that perfume Aunt Mabel gave you but that you never wear because you don't like the scent.

Next, let's look at the floor. Is there still clutter on the floor? Move quickly and put everything in either your "to put away" basket or the garbage can that doesn't belong on the floor. Toss the garbage and put away those items that need to be put back in their homes. Run the vacuum cleaner or sweep over the floor surface without moving furniture. This is meant to be quick and easy.

Next, let's take a look at the windows. If they're dirty, or if the window ledges are dusty, grab some rags and the appropriate cleaners and just give them a quick wipe. You'll pick up a lot of dust and things will look a lot better just with this small effort.

Next, we go inside closets and dressers.

First, let's take a look at your closet. Is it cluttered, with lots of stuff falling out of it? If it is, pick up anything that just tumbled out when you opened the door and put it aside. Go through your clothes. If you've got too many, you're not going to be able to wear those you want to wear, much less those you haven't even really seen in many years.

Get rid of everything you can't wear right now, whether it's too big, too small, out of style, or whatever. (And if you need to lose weight and are saving clothes for when you get to the "right size," get rid of those, too. Then, treat yourself to a brand-new wardrobe once you reach your goal weight.)

Donate the clothes that are perfectly good to women's shelters thrift stores, and so on, so that others can use them to need them. You can also sell clothes that are in good enough shape and of good enough quality at consignment stores or online. Remember that you should ONLY keep what fits and what looks good on you right now. When you have clothes you love and nothing else, you'll take better care of them.

Now, take a look at the clothes you have left once you've gotten rid of everything you can't or don't want to wear. Organize those by type. Put shirts with shirts, skirts with skirts, pants with pants, and so on. It'll make it much easier to get dressed in the morning once you know you can find clothes this way.

Next, take a look at your dressers. Drawer by drawer, go through each and toss anything old, stretched out, worn, stained, anything that has holes in it, and so on. Anything that can't be worn by anyone else (anything stained, ragged, or old underwear) should go into the garbage directly. Anything else can be donated to thrift stores or shelters, or in some cases can be sold at consignment stores or online. What you've got left can now be folded neatly, with enough room so that it doesn't get wrinkled.

Finally, take a look at your bedding and window treatments. Do you like the decor you've chosen in your bedroom? If you don't, now's the time to update. If you like everything but it looks a bit grungy, make sure you take down and wash curtains, window treatments, bedspreads, and so on. These things often don't get washed for years, but they should. Gentle cycle in the washer will generally clean most of these things, and you can air dry them outside or by draping them over curtain rods and the like before you put them back up or back on your bed, as the case may be.

When you're done, look around. You've just cleaned your master bedroom, and you can do exactly the same thing with the other bedrooms in your house, too. Remember that these should be a sanctuary for those who use them, and giving each a good cleaning and updating as necessary will make them just that.
