House: Hugh Laurie Delivers a Dose of 'House' - By: Groshan Fabiola

It's been almost a month into the latest season of the Fox network's hit medical drama House, and ratings continue to remain strong thanks to the antihero appeal of its titular curmudgeon. The character of Dr. Gregory House, played by British thespian Hugh Laurie, is well known for translating his genius-level intellect into a sardonic and highly abrasive attitude. His main redeeming quality is his skill at solving medical conundrums and curing the most complex of patient ailments. While the show has largely been about House and his co-workers taking on tough cases in the hospital, it also devotes a significant amount of time to their relationships with each other and personal issues.

During an interview with Hollywood.com before the start of the fourth season, Laurie expounded on his character's search for a new group to work with, after his entire team was either fired or quit during the end of the third season. According to Laurie, the doctor plans to put his candidates through the same kind of mental and emotional irritation that he regularly treated his old crew with. The actor stated his belief that House possessed "many devious means of psychological torture," and that each potential person who would go through the screening process for his new team would undergo their own specific nastiness tailor-made for them from him.

Despite House's attitude, the character has continued to remain attractive to a number of different women, such as his ex-colleague Cameron and his ex-wife Stacy. Laurie also offered his own views of why this was so, stating that House remains a troubled character who is still quietly seeking help and support from others. To give an analogy, Laurie recalled one of his favorite episodes of the classic science fiction series Star Trek, wherein Captain James Kirk was musing about how there was always someone out in space who needed help.
