There are many ways in which consumers can purchase light fittings. Indeed, those keen to improve their home lighting can head online to source items, or visit shops and warehouses that specialise in such products.

A less common way, however, is to go to an auction in order to pick them up.

According to an article in the Derby Evening Telegraph, this is precisely what happened recently when a hotel that has shut down put many of its interior features up for sale.

As well as light fittings, other objects that went under the hammer included kitchen equipment furniture, glassware and ceramics.

In addition to those who were looking to improve their home lighting or source other items for practical reasons, fans of the Kedleston Country House Hotel in Quarndon who were sad to see it shut may have been among those who attended the auction.

The building was Grade II-listed, had 11 rooms and was designed and built by Robert Adam in 1761.

Originally, it was a coaching inn for those staying in nearby Kedleston Hall.

According to Quarndon Parish Council chairman David Knight, the hotel had suffered in recent times as a result of the economic downturn.

Indeed, since financial conditions in the country took a dive in the wake of the credit crunch, many service industry businesses and other firms have struggled to make ends meet.

Mr Knight said: "It's a blow for people in the area because they have lost a local facility. But sadly this has been the case in many communities up and down the country because of the downturn."

He went on to claim that the venue was a great place for wedding receptions in its day but it struggled to get people in who were looking for a drink.

Meanwhile, he added that he hopes that the building will be used by someone in the future.
