Horse Sales and Common Mistakes People Make When Buying a Horse - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Horse sales can be a bit intimidating especially for first timers. If you are a newbie in this kind of shopping, you would not know what things to look for and to look out for when buying a horse. This is the reason why it is important to do your homework and conduct research about purchasing a horse before you actually do it. You can go to a horse farm and look for the horse that you think is suitable for your needs. You can also check out horse sales in websites or in newspapers' classified ads section.

Whether you are an experienced or a newbie horse buyer, you might commit some of the most common mistakes when buying a horse. Some of these mistakes are caused by lack of knowledge while others are the results of misinformation or neglect. Here are some of the mistakes that you should try to avoid during horse sales.

- Buying horses for sale at auctions is not a good thing because it is difficult to pick a good horse in this kind of situation. These auctions usually follow the "what you see is what you get" or "as is" policy. This is the reason why you have to be extremely careful when buying at auctions. If you can help it, try to avoid horse auctions. Sometimes, the horses for sale are drugged to hide some minor or serious problems that can be related to physical or behavior.

- impulse horse buying is also a big no-no. You have to know that buying a horse is very much different from buying clothes. You cannot afford to be impulsive if you are buying a horse. If you buy clothes on impulse and realize that you do not like what you have bought, you can just keep the clothes in your closet and not wear them. You cannot do this with a horse. You have to ride on the horse and ask a lot of questions to the owner first before you buy it.

- Another common mistake is to buy a horse that is not appropriate for your riding level. If you are a beginner, you probably have some nice ideas in your head like riding your horse and jumping over difficult obstacles. Do not buy a horse that is way beyond your riding skills no matter how excited you are to ride an amazing horse. You have to buy a nice horse that is perfect for beginners. Same thing if you are an advanced rider. You will just get bored and your skills will not be honed and improved if you buy a nice and easy horse.

- Although it is a nice thing if you can buy a horse that has the coloring that you like, you should not base your decision on the color alone. Appaloosa or palomino may look nice but make sure that the horses' mind, behavior, and physical stamina are suitable for your needs. Make sure that you consider the most important things first before you consider the color.
