Horse Riding For Beginners - By: Hannah McEwen

You might think there is not much to riding a horse. You get on, you grab the reins and let her rip. Once you're on a horse you might see it from a different perspective. For one, you're at least a yard off the ground. You are on top of a half ton beast that has its own brain ready to accelerate to 30 mph in a period of a few seconds with little regard (if you are lucky) to the fact that anything is strapped to their back. Here are some horse riding tips for beginners that you may find helpful before you take on riding a horse.

1. Riding a horse is a great adventure but there are till some inherent risks. Learn the proper way to ride a horse only with the most reputable schools and training facilities. Make sure that your instructor has the appropriate experience and qualifications to provide horse riding lessons.

2. Getting your own horse may have its pro’s and con’s. You may have the resources to afford one, but it does not stop there. It takes a great deal of time and dedication to take care of your own horse. Why don’t you look around for a while? Having a few horse riding lessons and make sure it is something you want to commit to. It also gives you a chance to speak with some expert riders and horse breeders about their experience owning horses.

3. Being excited at your first horse riding lesson is understandable. But what amazes me is when I see a novice basically spend the whole day on a riding a horse and then the next 2 days off a horse recovering from being sore. Horse riding skills are not learned overnight, it will take time to develop. Too much time on a horse can also damage your posterior.

4. Have horse riding etiquette. This doesn't only pertain to your equine friend but also to other riders. Etiquette is basically all about common sense and it's essential when you learn horse riding. Avoid getting too close to other riders, don’t touch or hit another rider’s horses and avoiding loud noises or abrupt movements that may spook other horses.

5. Never position yourself behind a horse. It makes a horse feel uncomfortable and they may kick you. A horse may be well trained to accommodate a rider on its back but in general, they are edgy and skittish. Simple things like sharp whistles and small animals can distract your horse and cause it to go into a bucking or running frenzy. Be aware of the trail and other elements that could affect the performance and state of mind of your equine partner.

6. Respect safety precautions and protocols. There is a big difference between confidence and being cocky. Cockiness usually results to accidents and injuries. You can always be confident without being too complacent.

Riding a horse is a great adventure that you will surely enjoy and cherish. It is an experience that will truly bring about a new kind of learning and awareness of these wonderful animals. Give your horse riding quest a good start by knowing the basic things you must keep in mind at all times and you are off to a galloping fun adventure that will definitely bring about great memories.
