Horse Dentistry From All Ages - By: Calvin Joness

For the past couple of centuries, Europeans have had a particularly strong interest in horse's teeth. Horses in the natural state do not usually require dentistry, the same as they do not require a furrier. Even if your vet checks your horse's teeth every half year, the chances are very high that there are points on the outside of the upper premolars and molars which are causing either constant discomfort or digging ulcerations in the cheeks.

A tendency to resist turning in a particular direction is, for example, a strong indication that the horse has some kind of problem on that side of its mouth. Many horses have persistent problems which cause uneven eating, distortions of facial muscle development and a build-up of pressure, which in turn can lead to constant headaches. Incorrect filing can radically change the angle of impact and effectively prevent the horse from eating.

A visit from and equine dentist can be as rewarding an experience for the owner as it is for the horse. Dressage, when done well, is seen as like a ballet for horses. Both the horse and rider must be fully in touch with each other and as such it can be seen as the pinnacle of team sport.

Dressage became noticed in Western Europe as a very useful training of horses in the renaissance period. Due to the formality of dressage, tack is usually black leather, although dark brown is seen from time to time. The standards of riding and training took and great leap forward with the introduction of dressage in the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games. Certain movements are to take place in the vicinity of specific letters.

Riders taking part in competitive dressage realise they need to concentrate on the piaffe, passage, half-pass, extended trot, and tempi changes. Grooming not only allows us to give our horses a shiny, short, healthy coat, it also gives us the opportunity to go over our beautiful animals from head to toe
