Hormone Replacement Therapy Increases the Risk of Breast Cancer! - By: Melvinc

Many women are hesitant to undergo hormone replacement because they fear that it will increase their chances of developing breast cancer. Even after detailed medical research, this remains a complicated and controversial issue, especially as we are talking about the most common cancer in the Western world. Generally speaking, a great deal has already been discussed on the issue of hormone replacement therapy. However, less is known specifically about this form of therapy for breast cancer survivors.

Traditional hormone replacement uses synthetic forms of estrogen and progesterone that are non-biological, or not identical, to human hormones. The synthetic hormones are chemically different and can disrupt normal breast cell metabolism leading to cancer. Stopping therapy may not reduce the risk. If you're a breast cancer survivor and you took hormones to relieve menopause symptoms you're three times more likely to develop a recurrence of the cancer.

In a new study, the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) researchers have gone back and reviewed their data on nearly 17,000 women who volunteered for this pivotal women's health study. In particular, the significant increase in breast cancer incidence that was observed among the WHI study women who had received HRT pills for an average of almost 6 years was then compared to the subsequent decline in breast cancer rates in this same group of women after the premature termination of the combination of the HRT portion of the WHI study. Among the group of women randomized to receive HRT pills, the incidence of new breast cancer cases after 5.6 years of HRT was almost twice as high as was observed in the "control group" of women that received only placebo pills.

Medical research shows that low doses of hormone replacement therapy for less than 10 years does not significantly contribute to the development of breast cancer in the general population, but the question is, does this apply to the population of women cured of breast cancer? Sadly, there were no studies to confirm this and no evidence has yet surfaced from past studies to answer this.
