Hope For Visual Dyslexia In Children - By: Mohammed Bhojan

Problems with your child’s eye sight and their visual processing in particular, can greatly hinder academic progress at school - but these problems are not always resolved with a simple visit to the local opticians for a sight test or ordinary glasses.

A selective group of Clinical and Behavioural Optometrists in the UK exam children and adults be examined for ‘Visual Stress’, or ‘Visual Dyslexia’. They can asses a persons eyes and then prescribe specially designed precision-tinted lenses that can make an instant and astonishing improvement to the ability of children and adults to separate writing from the surrounding background.

People who have been found to be 'Visually Dyslexic' can often be highly talented incluidng Mozart, Sir Richard Branson and Sir Anthony Hopkins, yet learning, reading and visual processing difficulties often can result in a child being criticised at school for being ‘slow’ or ‘stupid’. Visual Stress and Visual Dyslexia often cause concentration and comprehension difficulties and therefore result in a feeling of frustration for parents and teachers and even more so for the individual with the visual processing problem.

Visual stress and Visual Dyslexia is also referred to by others as ‘Meares – Irlen Syndrome’ also known as ‘Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome’. This condition was identified in 1980 by an American psychologist and although the condition is not yet fully understood, it is known to affect a persons reading and comprehension ability.
Research shows this condition affects about 50% of Dyslexics, and those who have been diagnosed with Dyspraxia and other Autistic Spectral Disorders (ASD) such as AD(H)D as well as epileptics, migraine sufferers, people with ME and MS, and others conditions too.

Like Dyslexia, visual stress is not curable but can certainly be treated, and significant improvements can be made.

A child's life can be disastrously affected by visual dyslexia, so it is vital that early assessment and treatment is sought, particularly if your child experiences regular comprehension, reading, writing or learning challenges or has been diagnosed with a learning difficulty by an educational psychologist.
