In the last 10 years data handling has become big business, and companies have opened up to process all the data which now exists about everything and everyone in the world. Home working data entry jobs have evolved because all this collected data needs to be entered into data capture software programs that enable these companies to sell it.

The masses of data that pass through these companies needs a huge work force to process it. Those companies who have employed an on-site work force have found that the cost of the office space and other employee costs like holiday pay, sick pay, pensions and insurance have eaten into their profits. The solution was to offer the data entry work to people working at home on their own computer, who operate on a self-employed basis. All data can then be transferred to the company electronically.

These companies are also paid to process specific data by their customers and the type and quantity of data can vary tremendously. This is known as traditional data entry, which requires you to encode data into a computer system for your employer and, in return, your employer will pay you per job or per hour. The information entered can be either regular text typing or the entering of numerical data.

There is however another type, called non-traditional data entry which is more of a freelance job. Non-traditional data entry however entails promoting websites by placing online ads on other sites for these website owners. You don’t need any prior experience or knowledge to do this. The only information you need is how to place the ads and where to place them.

The main requirements of the data entry worker are:
1. They must be a fast, accurate keyboard operator
2. They must have the ability to concentrate and keep alert and focused for long periods of time
3. They must be able to organize their time to meet demanding deadlines
4. They must be computer literate
5. They must have a keen eye for detail
6. They must be reliable
7. They must be well-organized

Also, here are some questions you have to consider when deciding whether or not to accept a data entry job opportunity:

• Will you receive support from family and friends? Having a solid support from those around you will allow you to be more relaxed when working.

• Do you possess the right mental powers required to do a data entry job? The long periods of intense mental concentration can take its toll if you do not have the ability to stay focused. Stress can set in and errors will result.

• What are your strengths and weaknesses that can affect your performance in this type of job? Knowing your strengths and weaknesses can allow you to work on them to be more effective at your job.

If you feel you meet these criteria and answered these questions positively then a data entry job may be for you. However, before you click on the first search result you see and sign yourself up, I need to give you a word of warning. Make sure that the company offering you work is legitimate and your services will be properly compensated. Check out how the job will be priced. If it is priced per job and it takes you longer than you expected, the return might not be worth it.

I hope I don’t need to remind you about fraudulent operators on the Internet, but believe me they are out there, so do your research about any company first before dealing with them, and never pay them any money up front. Legitimate companies should not work that way. Refuse to deal with them if they do and they will eventually get the message and change.
