Home Wind Energy - Is It Cost Effective? - By: Joe Heinemann

If you are researching home wind energy as a source of power for you and your family, it is a smart idea to first decide if it is practical for your situation. These systems can be costly depending on what you are trying to do so you have to make sure that you can recoup your investment. If it is going to take you 50 years to get back what you invested, I am sure you will agree that this would not make much sense.

Before you actually take the plunge and invest in a home wind energy system, there are a few issues that you need to think about. Any type of wind energy has it's own unique requirements and you should make sure that your situation and region is compatible.

Before you do anything, you have to decide if the area you live in will have good wind resources available. Particular parts of the country are by and large more suited for wind energy than others. The Southeast is primarily considered the worst and offshore locations the best. The Govt. has a website with wind resource maps that will rank how your region stacks up to other locations. This doesn't mean that you will not be able to utilize wind energy if you live in a region that is not considered ideal, but it will make it more difficult.

Your land must also be acceptable for harvesting the wind that is available to you. The tower that you put up must be taller than any tree lines on your land and any buildings or structures that are close to your land. If you have many tall tree lines, these will obstruct the wind and you will not be able to generate enough energy. Vast open fields or farm land is the perfect setting and if you live on this kind of property you will have a great start.

There are also other elements including tax write-offs that could be available to you depending on your local region. Depending on the expenses of your particular wind system, you could get a good tax reduction. You have to search your local and state laws and regulations because each state in general will be unique in some way.

Home wind energy can be a good option for alternative energy especially now with the current energy crisis we are suffering. Before making any final decisions though, make sure that you take all of these things into account. The important thing is that you will want to be certain that in the end you will benefit because many of these wind energy systems can be very expensive initially.
