Home Upgrades: What Is Really Value-For-Money? - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Whether you are renovating or building, you will need to consider many alternatives and make many decisions while trying to make the most of your budget to have everything you want. Your builder may have different options to offer you, or tempt you with, to upgrade in certain areas. Where can you save a bit of money and what really must be included? These tips are to help you understand more about the upgrades you may be offered and which ones are worth the money because they will be more expensive to add later.

If you have an option for extra space, additional square footage, you should look carefully at whether you can afford it at this time. Adding extra floor area is likely to cost more later on. There might be some limitations to you being allowed to add on in the future. This particular upgrade is one that should be seriously considered, as it is definitely worth the money.

Another common upgrade offered by builders and electricians is the number of electrical outlets provided. While you may think that you have enough power outlets, you often find they are not conveniently positioned or you need more. Having them installed during the initial building is cheaper and won't mean holes being punched in the wall, which is what will happen if power outlets are added later on. The upgrade offer of extra power outlets is one that you should consider taking up, as you will always be grateful for the additional outlets. This is also one upgrade that is worth what it costs.

The same theory applies to a cable and telephone jack upgrade, because they are also cheaper and easier to install when the building is incomplete than after completion. Seriously consider taking up an option for additional cable and telephone connections. Extra connections are very useful and you will probably be able to decide where they can be placed in the house. It is always cheaper to have work done at the same time as other jobs, so consider having a fax line installed as well. Where the cable and telephone jacks are positioned often determines where you can put your furniture, so this is an important issue to consider when deciding about this upgrade. This is another upgrade option definitely worth the money.

You might even be offered the kitchen of your dreams as an optional upgrade. You may want a kitchen that is expensive, but certain parts of it may be considerably cheaper to have done while you are building, compared to leaving it to some future time. It is relatively easy to change the counters, floors and cabinets down the track, but if you need a specific arrangement of kitchen furniture this can be expensive, even if it is possible, to do at a later time. Any major alterations to the configuration of the kitchen can be very messy and pricey when done at a later time, so try to get the basics of your design constructed during building, so you will eventually have your dream kitchen. While you might have to do without in some areas, perhaps waiting for the dishwasher, the shape of your dream kitchen will be in place, including the power and plumbing.

These tips regarding optional upgrades will help you find your way through the minefield of offers that your builder might present you with.
