Home Renovation - By: Terry S Vostor

Years ago an experienced heating and plumbing contractor had a simple rule when it came to assessing and evaluating potential clients and customers. Wise Eddie Dixon noted that it was a truism and a constant. If a homeowner's yard was neat and tidy - then that showed that they were organized and orderly and that "you would get paid for the job. If not then lol lots of luck. It seemed according to the expert, with his expertise of the ages as a solid plumbing and heating contractor that if they could not keep their yard in order , then their personal finances and effects would not be in order otherwise and they could neither keep their pocketbook or checkbook in order. Call Kirk.

It's all in the follow through. How do you assess whom to hire for the project. Remember as well that at different points and at for different projects you may well choose different contractors and home renovation professionals.

First of all how does the agent present themselves? It should be in a business like manner. Check out and even test the workers. Do they pick up the call promptly ? Do they check their answering machine regularly and in an ongoing prompt responsible manner ? What about their Outlook / Outlook Express or Thunderbird email ?
Is their website updated on a regular and ongoing basis. Can they be contacted easily - by phone or email? Note and mark down at what intervals calls are returned and points as well as concerns replied to. Not only returned but promptly.

Next is the two way communication process. Does the home renovation expert listen to you? Or do they just plow through with what they want, regardless of your wishes? Are they open to new ideas - or your ideas? Be careful of dogmatic individuals who insist that there is only one way to "do the job". On top of that watch out for contractors who insult other's finished or unfinished work. Have they no pride ?

Ask about their training , who they learned and practiced under. Did they go through a mentoring apprenticeship program. How long have they been in business ? How long in the area ? What building suppliers do they deal with ? What are their terms ? Can you have a standard contractor's legal payment hold-back? Any home renovation project can be fraught with difficulties yet unimagined or encountered. What depth of experience and expertise does the contractor bring to you and the project? Do they have professional or trade credentials. What is their reputation?

Its an old precept in the mutual fund business , that while you ask for references , referrals and work record that "past history is not necessarily indicative of future returns". Who knows last years wunderkind may currently undergoing a horrendous divorce and his or her mind is elsewhere - not necessarily focused on your specific project - to your great dismay. If the contractor has been around in the business for a while then he or she must have good references of their work. While its true that trades currently are "hard to come by", and that the person or company bidding for your employment may be new in the area , still its only a phone call or email away to contact previous jobs and those who contracted for their work. Look for finished projects and consistency in efforts. Every contractor is bound to run across one or two bad situations or jobs. That is the luck of the draw. It's the consistency that matters most of results, interactions and referrals and references.

All in all it can be said, that an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure when it comes to sourcing and checking out workmen for your spring upgrades and renovations. Its not a case of 1 % or 100 % yet it will be the home or property owner that will pay the piper at the end of the day or the project / projects. Have fun.
