Jaundice means the yellow appearance of the skin and whites of the eyes that occurs when the blood contains an excess of the pigment called bilirubin.
Bilirubin is a natural product arise from the normal stop working of red blood cells in the body and is excreted in the bile, through the events of the liver.
Although jaundice is most often the result of a disorder moving the liver, it can be caused by a diversity of other conditions affecting, for example, the blood or spleen. It should be methodically investigated, so that the original cause can be identified and treated.
Causes of Jaundice
When red blood cells die, the hem in their hemoglobin is converted to bilirubin in the spleen. The bilirubin is process by the liver, enters bile and is in the end excreted through feces.
Once hemoglobin is in the red cells of the blood, it circulates for the life span of those cells. The hemoglobin that is released when the cells die is turned into bilirubin.
If for any cause the RBCs die at a faster rate than usual, bilirubin can build up in the blood and cause jaundice.
Symptoms of Jaundice
1. Yellow skin
2. Yellow eyes
3. Dark or reddish urine
4. Orange urine
5. Red urine
6. Bronze skin
7. Loss of appetite
8. Bitter taste in mouth
9. Furry tongue
10. Pale feces
Treatment of Jaundice
1. The patient should rest till acute symptoms subside.
2. Adopt fruit juice fast for a week.
3. Administer hot water enema daily.
4. The below mentioned diet after the severity of the disease is over –
5. On rising – A glass of warm water with 2 teaspoon of lime juice.
6. Breakfast – One juicy fruit like apple, papaya, mango, grapes or berries and 1 slice of whole wheat bread.
7. Mid morning – orange juice
8. Lunch – 2 slices of whole wheat bread, a cup of strained vegetable soup, a steamed leafy vegetable and a glass of buttermilk.
9. Mid afternoon – coconut water or orange juice.
10. Dinner – whole wheat bread, baked potato, steamed vegetable and a glass of hot milk with honey.
11. Butter, oils and cream should be avoid for at least 2 weeks.
Home Remedies for Jaundice
1. The green leaves of radish should be broken up and their juice extracted through cloth. Half a liter of this juice should he taken daily by an adult patient. It induces a healthy hunger and proper evacuation of bowels, and this result in slow decrease of the trouble. In most cases, complete cure can be ensured within 8 or 10 days.
2. Take a glass of fresh tomato juice, varied with a pinch of salt and intersperse early in the morning. It is an effective remedy for jaundice.
3. The juice extract from the green leaves of pigeon pea should be in use in doses of 60 ml daily. It is an effective home remedy for jaundice.
4. Soak 8 kernels of almonds, 2 dried dates, and 5 small cardamoms during the night in water. The outer outside layer of the almond kernels and the inner seeds of dehydrated dates should be detached the next morning and the whole material should be rub into a fine paste. Then, 50 grams of sugar and an equivalent amount of butter should be varied in it and the patient should lick this mixture.
5. Take 1 glass of sugarcane juice, varied with the juice of half a lime, and in use twice daily. It is very effectual treatment for jaundice though it must be clean and if possible prepared at home.
6. You can also take 20 ml of lemon juice mixed with water several times a day. This will protect the damaged liver cells.
7. Boil 1 cup of barley in 3 liters of water and simmer for 3 hours. Drink it several times during the day. It is also an effectual home remedy for jaundice.
