Home Decorating with Antique Art Prints: Original Antiques or Reproduced Antique Pritnts - By: Joseph Borowy

Decorating with framed antique prints is very popular for many interior decorators. Adding framed antique fish prints and bird prints is a simple way to enhance a “lodge” atmosphere in a country log cabin. Arranging botanical prints, such as grasses and roses, can be a simple way to give your bathroom a calming, soothing "Green" atmosphere. While millions frame and mount antique prints for decoration, all are faced with the inescapable decision of choosing to seek out antique original prints, or opting to find reproduced antique prints. Although the predicament is seldom debated among designers and decorators, the decision made bears consequences of potentially vital significance.

Though some believe antique original prints possess a splendid visual character quality that just can't be duplicated, many are not able to distinguish an original antique print from an alike reproduced print. The discrepancy of opinion is usually a product of the condition of the individual original. When creating reproductions digital editing software can be used to restore color, detail and quality. However, things such as the appearance of aged paper, can't be reproduced accurately. Up until the early 90's there was almost no question as to whether an original antique print looked better than a reproduced print. It wasn’t until our age of computer technology that antique prints were able to be scanned (either by digital scanner or camera), digitally restored, and printed with such superb quality and attention to detail that the reproductions rival their origins.

Regardless of individual perspective on the comparison of looks, there is little argument on the cost factor. Antique original prints will be substantially more expensive. In light of this, the question is often asked - if most viewers would have a hard time telling the difference, one must wonder, is the price difference really justifiable? Well, it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. For most do it yourself interior designers and DIY home decorators, the answer is no (especially considering that many will mount groupings in many rooms in their homes). However, to some collectors of fine antiques, the vintage originality of an art print that dates back several hundred years is very desirable, and the price is justifiable. Another aspect of original antique prints is the investment value of some rare prints. Like any collectable, the values of antique originals can potentially appreciate over time. This is surely worth considering for those who desire value just as much as they do decor. Still, for many decorators it is much more cost efficient to look for quality reproduction prints that accomadate their individual preferences and needs.

Cost efficiency is not the only advantage to decorating with reproduced antique prints. They also provide customized options that assist in fitting a unique work of art into an already well decorated room. Finding a desired print available in 11x14 to fit in a wall display grouping, when the original from which it came was a 5x7, is a luxury available only through reproduction. If trying to stay on a tight budget, seek publishers that print in Standard Sizes- (11"x14", 8"x10", and 5"x7"). Because these sizes are commonly used, one can aquire low cost framing and matting materials. The ability to order a print in Black & White or Sepia is also a decorating advantage. While not all publishers offer these options, seeking out those who do may be an essential element to spicing up a room with the desired effect without compromising the established layout.
